Review from a play therapist

"Wanda" is a book set in South Africa about a brown-skinned girl named Wanda who seems ashamed of her beautiful, natural, crown of Afro hair. She is made fun of because of her "bushy" hair and tries her best to tie it up into neat styles so that her (presumably white) teacher does not label Wanda's hair a "birds nest" or say she does not fit into this school.
With the help of her grandmother, Wanda gains a greater appreciation of her natural hair.
This book highlights Wanda's positive, female, role models and helps her understand who she is in a wider cultural context. The story also addresses systematic racism that still lingers in some South African schools today.

I highly recommend this book to parents and therapists who have or work with brown-skinned girls.
